This week, Activision announced at GamesCon that PS4 users were getting a free weekend of playing the new Call of Duty game: Modern Warfare. The download went live on PS Store yesterday and sits at a whopping 35GB download.
All owners of the Sony console will be able to play starting Friday until Sunday, August 25th. The best part tho? You don’t even need PlayStation plus to play! All you need is an internet connection. So get on it, soldier!
Thanks, Activision <3
What Can You Play?
2v2 Gunfight in a completely new game type where you battle with a friend against another duo in a first to 6 game mode. Each round, every player has access to one life, meaning there is no respawn available in between rounds, which is very reminiscent of the Search & destroy game type. There’s also a tight time limit, although you’re typically playing in very small maps so that shouldn’t pose any problems.
The first map that I encountered was Pine, a beautiful map situated in a lush forest filled with shipping containers, old rusted cars, and makeshift three houses.
There is a total of five maps in the Alpha: Speedball, King, Pine, Docks, and Stack.
I also noticed that every few rounds, weapons changed for you and the enemy team which means you have to adjust quickly to the completely new weapon, and some of them are very different. You could have been doing very well with a sniper just to get switched to a handgun in the next round!
What Guns Can We Play With?
During the 4 games that I played, I got my hands on a few handguns and perhaps the most famous one, the Desert Eagle. This gun, as expected, had bad handling but it was a two-shot kill at medium range and a one-shot kill point-blank.
As for Assault riffles, we got the AUG and the FAMAS. If you’re a veteran of the series – or any FPS games for the mater – you will recognize these two names.
The AUG handled very well and is fully automatic. I think it will be one of the most-used rifles in the game.
The Famas was very powerful and semi-automatic, shooting a burst of three bullets at a time. It’s always been one of my favorite weapons so I will definitely use this in my primary loadout during the full Multiplayer beta coming in less than a month.
We also got to try two different shotguns, the tactical one being my favorite just because you have more than two shells and the reloading time is quicker than the classic two-barrel shotty.
Last but not least, two LMGs also joined the gunfight and I was impressed by how you could actually feel the weight of the weapon. Those are usually the ones I play with as typically in CoD games if you used perks you could get them to handle like any riffle. That coupled with a large magazine was very deadly.
Though this time around, I’m not sure LMGs will give you such a big advantage over your enemy, and I’m okay with that.
First Game Impressions
The game definitely plays like an Infinity Ward CoD and you’ll recognize the HUD as they took a lot of elements from Call of Duty Ghosts. It looks sleek, it’s not overbearing, and it doesn’t obstruct your field of view.
I didn’t notice any bugs or lag spikes when playing, the game ran very smooth on my PS4 Pro without any hiccups.
It feels extremely realistic compared to all the previous entry in the game, from the movement to the gunfire to the in-game sounds. When shots snap over your head, you can almost feel how close you were to getting hit. They kept the running slide in, but I don’t feel that it takes anything away from the game’s realism.
You can ‘mount’ on any surface, and even ‘peak’, or lean, behind walls by pressing R3 which grants you additional cover while giving you the ability to completely cover one or more line of sights for your teammates. Pro tip: use this to cover flank routes!
I only got to play one hour so far, but I am really enjoying the way the movement feels and the overall atmosphere of the maps. I can’t wait to try the beta next month to see all the customization options on the weapons and the characters!
